Description
Saltor are relatively obscure monsters and were mentioned first in the Lords of Madness scource book for 3.5. Basically a Saltor is a member of the Illithidae family. It is to a mindflayer, what a baboon is to us. Somehow related, but very different. The original text mentioned little detail: just a simian silhouette, orange fur, and a tentacle beard.

I love this so much. I've always thought the saltor was a cool creature but never been satisfied with any pictures of it until now.
One clarification, though: the saltor was first printed in Dragon Magazine #150 way back in 1989 for AD&D 1st edition. In that issue it was mentioned that D&D's carrion crawler is actually an overgrown saltor larva that failed to metamorphose and remained a mindless scavenger.
